How to Stay Fit While Traveling: 4 Simple Rules I Follow
Maintaining your fitness routine while traveling can feel impossible. Between long flights, unpredictable schedules, and delicious local food, it is easy to let healthy habits slide. After years of traveling for work and leisure, here are the four simple rules I follow to stay in shape on the road.
1. PACK A RESISTANCE BAND
This is my ultimate travel hack. Resistance bands take up zero space in your suitcase and weigh nothing. You can use them in your hotel room for a quick 15-minute full-body workout, eliminating the excuse of a poorly equipped hotel gym.
2. EXPLORE THE CITY ON FOOT
Skip the taxis and subways whenever possible. Walking is the best way to truly see a new city, and it easily burns hundreds of calories. I always aim for at least 15,000 steps a day when exploring, which naturally offsets the extra vacation calories.

3. THE 80/20 RULE FOR EATING OUT
Trying local cuisine is a huge part of traveling, so don’t restrict yourself entirely. I follow the 80/20 rule: I eat healthy, protein-rich meals for breakfast and lunch (80%), and allow myself to indulge in whatever I want for dinner and dessert (20%).
4. HYDRATE ON PLANES
Flying severely dehydrates your body, which can lead to fatigue and false hunger. I always buy a large bottle of water after passing security and force myself to drink it during the flight. Staying hydrated keeps your energy levels up for when you land.

The Bottom Line
Fitness during travel shouldn’t be about hitting personal bests in the gym; it is about maintenance. Keep your body moving, make smart food choices during the day, and enjoy your trip without the guilt.
